If there’s one thing all late-model Mustangs have, it’s that adding numerically higher gears will help acceleration and make your car faster. So why not check out Brothers Performance’s selection of rear end ratios and Gear Your Ford Mustang for Better Performance.
Ford used a variety of rear end ratios in the Mustang depending on year and model. Many Fox body Mustang came equipped with a 2.73:1 ratio, 3.08s were optional. It was quite common for enthusiasts to swap in a 3.55, 3.73 and 4.10 gears, while more hardcore racers went for 4.30, 4.56 and 4.88 gears. The highest ratio for the Ford 8.8 is a 5.14.
Brothers Performance offers virtually all the Ford Racing gear ratios, and you can purchase just the gears or a complete kit with Ford Racing Gears, Ford Racing 8.8 inch Ring and Pinion Installation Kit (M-4210-B2), Redline Synthetic 75W90 Gear Oil, and Ford Racing Friction Modifier (M-19546-A12).
Numerically taller gears provide increased torque multiplication and this greatly improves acceleration. For instance, swapping from 3.31 gears (in a 2005-2010 Mustang GT) to 3.73 gears, can knock as much as four tenths (.40) of a second off your quarter-mile time! The extra torque multiplication also gives you greater mid-range response and helps the engine accelerate much more quickly. With Ford parts you’re getting quality, as these gears are manufactured to the same tolerances and at the same plant as your factory Mustang gears which are designed to last over 100,000 miles.
To increase strength and ensure durability, the gears are heat-treated gears and feature beveled edges to eliminate tooth chipping and gear failure. The installation kit includes the high torque pinion bearing known as the Bullitt bearing that is factory equipment on GT500 Mustangs to handle the increased torque and rpm.
Changing your Mustang's gear ratio will alter the calibration of the speedometer and requires the use of a different speedometer gear or recalibrating tool such as an SCT Power Flash Tuner.
