2015 King Cobra Ford Mustang
Of the Many Mustangs our BrothersPerformance.com team saw at the recently held 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, one of the most popular was the 2015 King Cobra Ford Mustang built to show off the new line-up of Ford Racing parts.
The King Cobra was wrapped with a snake-skin pattern with unique wheels from Weld Racing. But the real hardware was underneath. The 5.0 Coyote GT featured Ford Racing’s first performance packages available for the 2015 Mustang. It is equipped with Ford Racing’s “Drag Pack,” “Handling Pack,” and “Super Pack” supercharger kit that helps the King Cobra produce 600-plus horsepower.
“At Ford Racing, we like to push cars to their absolute limit,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “This is something we have been doing for 113 years and why we were so excited to get our hands on the all-new, 2015 Mustang. We wanted Mustang enthusiasts to be able to open up the Ford Racing parts catalog and get one of everything and see what they could get. We think the King Cobra package is it, but none of this great work would be possible if Team Mustang had not built the best production Mustang yet,” he added.
Straight-line and street performance enthusiasts will certainly be interested in the new Drag Pack, which includes heavy-duty half shafts, and a rear sub-frame kit with pre-installed high-performance bushings. The kit will enhance traction and keep that power hooked to the ground under hard acceleration.
If you’re looking for a drop, the Handling Pack is your ticket. Ford Racing states it will lower the car approximately one inch using new front and rear lowering springs. One benefit to the kit is that the front springs come pre-assembled on the struts. The Handling Pack also includes rear shocks and a stabilizer bar kit.
Horsepower, of course, is something we’re all after. And 2015 Mustang owners will want to look at the Ford Racing Super Pack, featuring a 2.3L Twin Vortices Series (TVS) supercharger that’s co-developed and co-branded by Ford Racing and ROUSH Performance. The kit includes a six-rib belt drive system, new high-flow intake manifold, electronic throttle body, air inlet system, fuel rail and high-flow fuel injectors—plus an air-to-liquid intercooler system and the Ford Racing performance computer calibration.
To ensure the parts produce results on track the Ford Racing team tested an early version of the King Cobra package at Michigan’s Milan Dragway. The GT ripped to a best quarter-mile elapsed time of 10.97 seconds.
According to Ford Racing, “We chose the name King Cobra for this parts package because of its long association with high-performance Ford vehicles. The King Cobra moniker was first introduced by Carroll Shelby in 1963 for the high-performance Cooper Monaco sports racing cars he built with mid-mounted, 289-cubic-inch Ford V8 engines.”
Ford enthusiasts know the name was attached to Ford Torino in 1970 for aerodynamic prototype designed for NASCAR racing, but the vehicle never saw competition. And of course you recognize the King Cobra package available on the 1978 Mustang II. What you may not know is the King Cobra in 1978 was the first Mustang to sport the “5.0” designation for the metric equivalent of the V8 engine’s 302 cubic-inch displacement.
