Most automotive enthusiasts are already well aware that the new Camaro ZL1, powered by a potent 650 horsepower supercharged LT4, is a top-level performer. The ZL1’s 3.5 second 0-60 time is proof that it will be a stout performer on the dragstrip, but what about top speed?

Well, that question was recently answered on the Papenburg test track in Germany. The ZL1 was able to eclipse the 200mph mark during testing, a first for the Camaro and nearly as fast as the Corvette ZR1. The official top speed is 198. To make the official number the car must run the track in both directions and take the average of the two.

Testing was done on a stock ZL1 with stock tires. The only add-ons allowed were safety and data logging equipment. The ZL1 has plenty of grip in the corners also, generating 1.02g of lateral grip on the skidpad, which helped the test drivers go around the banked track flat out.

Not many years ago you’d have to buy an obscenely expensive exotic to get performance like this. Now you can walk into your local Chevy dealer and pick up the ZL1 Camaro for a little over $60,000. Sure, today’s supercars are even faster but it’s great to see that you can get 3/4 of the performance (or better) for less than 1/4 the cost.
